Maldives to introduce a ‘more secure’ passport from next year

Speaking during a press conference immigration controller Mohamed Anwar said the new Maldivian passport set to be introduced from January 1 will be on par with European standards.

“Maldives will become the only country in the region with a passport with the strongest security features,” controller added.

According to Anwar the passport has now been designed and is now being printed. The model of the new passport will be unveiled in November, he said.

The new passport’s data page and cover will be made from poly-carbonate, he continued. This type of passport has never been forged yet, Anwar said.

Despite the added features, passport renewal cost would remain the same and the existing passports can still be used until expiry, he said.
